Four kids on their home planet make a mysterious discovery that leads them to get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Jude Law in “Skeleton Crew” and more stars from a galaxy far, far away. AniMat in a crazy animated movie starring: Silly Old Deadly Bear (2022). I can’t for the life of me figure out why Obi-Wan and the Acolyte look any cheaper than this show. From a production standpoint, Skeleton Crew is the first Star Wars show in a while that feels expansive, complete, and entertaining. Despite the lack of excitement felt by Star Wars viewers in a while, the last place I would hope to see this IP redeem itself is as a children’s series. My favorite Star Wars movies/shows have always been the darker ones, Episodes 5, 3, Andor, parts of Rogue One, and The Mandalorian. But Skeleton Crew captures a perspective that Star Wars is sorely lacking: kids. I get a sense of wonder, adventure, and stakes that I haven’t felt from this universe in a while. It’s also pretty annoying that the only carefully directed show they’ve put out without Andor and a decent handful of The Mandalorian. There are actual scenes, actual character growth, goofy scenes that tell a story instead of just looking like Star Wars. Star Wars has always been aimed at both kids and adults – the irony is that they need to create a kids’ show that reminds us that the basic art of storytelling still exists as Disney. Please keep making shows like this for kids, and please keep making shows like Andor for adults. It’s the driving force in the middle that constantly influences the tone of other entries – Obi-Wan is a prime example. It had no idea who its audience was and was ill-advised to try to fit in with everyone. Another example that comes to mind is Boba Fett. Kudos to the showrunners for bringing something new to Star Wars. Sure, heavily influenced by the era of kids riding bikes, but a fresh take on the universe that my partner and I enjoyed.
